Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Formation Flight System
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) were a mystery from the early times. How an aerial vehicle can
move without any human pilot in it? Science has made its introduction possible. An UAV can move with other
similar vehicles in a Formation Flight System (FFS). They are properly guided and controlled each other in
such a manner that their movement will form a special geometrical pattern in the sky. It may be one, two or
three dimensional with any number of vehicles in such a fashion like flocks of birds flying in air. The birds
form a special pattern. The leading bird flies in front with two other birds just behind on the right and on the
left each. This pattern will reduce the aerodynamic drag. FFS of UAVs is copied from this natural phenomenon.
The team consists of one leader UAV and two followers. Suppose if the leader deviates from its speci-
fied trajectory, the visual sensors in the follower UAVs sense these deviation signatures. The followers com-
municate the required commands to the leader UAV in order to re-enter into the specified trajectory. The Pro-
portional Navigation Guidance (PNG) algorithm used in missile technology can be successfully applied to the
formation flight mechanism. The formation flight of military planes in warfare is its common application. Sev-
eral geometrical patterns in FFS are available to the protection of this fighter UAVs and their control and guid-
ance is a difficult task.
