Tolkein and C. S. Lewis were friends before Lewis’s conversion to Christianity. The
Internet legend, in a version that seems to originate from Humphrey Carter’s The
Inklings, has it that in one of their discussions Lewis was arguing, from a posture of
‘rationalist’ atheism, that myths were not valuable in the modern world, that they were
worthless lies or something to that effect; however beautiful their expressions, they were
naught but falsehoods ‘breathed through silver’.
