Shopping trolley

Pre-activity (5 minutes)

• Write the food items below on the board. In pairs, students talk about the prices for these items in their Own country. (Explain that dozen means twelve.) Have a class feedback session.

Eggs 70p per half dozen

Ketchup £1.00 per bottle

Butter 50p per packet

Olive oil £2.99 per litre

Bananas 20p each

Toilet roll 1.99 for 6

Toothpaste £1.40 per tube

Bread 60p per loaf

Coffee £1.99 per packet

Apples 15p each"

Milk 70p per litre

Sugar 40p per kilogram

• Tell students the average prices in Britain for each item. Leave the items and prices on the board as students will need to refer to them in the Extension activity.

Procedure (20 minutes)

• Explain that students are going to work out what shopping they need to get. Their partner can see what they have in their home and will tell them if they need to buy certain items.

• Divide students into pairs. Give Students A worksheet A, and Students B worksheet B.

• In pairs, students take it in turns to ask and answer questions to see which items on their list they need to buy, and which can wait, e.g. How many eggs have I got? Two. How much butter have-I got?

A lot/A little, etc. Go around listening, making sure students use much/many correctly.

• Have a class feedback session.

Extension (10 minutes)

• When everybody has finished, divide students into groups of four and tell them that there is a problem. They have run out of all the items on their list. They have looked in the kitty and there is only £5. In their groups, students decide which items to buy.

• Have a class feedback session to see what each group has chosen.
