DESIGN, UNDERPAINTING, AND PLEIN AIR WITH PASTEL

Location: Center for Visual Arts (morning) and Oak Island (afternoon,
weather
permitting, otherwise at Center for Visual Arts)
Class Schedule: 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Lunch on your own.
Level: Beginner to intermediate.
Price: $85

Cheryl LeClair-Sommer, Michelle Wegler, and Lisa Stauffer will co-teach a workshop
in soft pastel. This collaborative group will discuss how to simplify and strengthen
your compositions using value sketches and thumbnails, define how to create and
enhance atmospheric perspective, and how to use underpainting techniques such as
oil stain, watercolor, and pastel washes. Discussion about painting outdoors,
supplies, and how to critique your own work.

The group will paint outdoors in the afternoon (weather permitting) to use some of
the skills learned in the morning. With inclement weather, the group will remain at
the Center for Visual Arts and paint from photographs.

Much personal attention at your easel.

Instructors will demo in pastel and underpainting techniques for pastel but are
familiar with painting in oil and watercolor. Students are welcome to work in these
mediums and much information will be provided that is universally applicable to all
painting mediums. Participants without background in pastel welcome.

Supplies needed:

supply of pastels (recommend a minimum of 96 NuPastels for those starting out)


bristle brush (preferably somewhat worn)
watercolors (student set ok)
easel and backing board such as masonite or gatorboard (in lieu of easel bring lawn
chair and
backing board)
masking tape
sanded papers such as Art Spectrum or Wallis paper (or papers that can receive oil or
water –
prefer small size such as 9” x 12” or smaller)(instructors will have paper for
sale)
sketchbook or sketchpaper
8B pencil (or other soft lead pencil)

A more detailed supply list will be provided with registration.

Instructors will have a variety of sanded papers and other supplies for sale.
