The Arc of Constantine, like some other romans triumphal arches, is decorated by Corinthian

columns which stand on pedestals. These columns are not the major structural object to support the
arc, instead they act as frames to the sculptured panels. The columns are attached to the four piers,
which are supporting the arches and the attic storey. Similar to the Greeks, the romans were not
delighted to calculate accurately the thickness of the piers needed to support the upper part.
Therefore, the piers were built thicker than structurally necessary. The Corinthian order can be seen
similar to the Greeks.
