Prosthetic Legs:

Ethical Considerations?
There are many things to consider when it comes to the ethics of using prosthetic legs. One of
the main issues of debate has come to be the use of prosthetic legs for professional athletes. People ask
the question “is it fair for people that have prosthetic limbs to compete?” People say that prosthetic
limbs give people an unfair advantage over others who don’t have prosthetic limbs. The reason that
people say that is because people who have prosthetic legs never get tired, and therefore automatically
have more endurance and an unfair advantage over those who run off of their natural legs.
Another thing to consider when it comes to using prosthetic legs is their cost. People who would
benefit from having prosthetic legs are usually inhibited because of the high cost of getting them. This
raises another ethical issue, of whether or not people should have more access to prosthetic legs,
especially in cases where they need them in order to move on with their lives. People argue that
prosthetics should be more affordable and that it is unethical to raise prices due to their high demand.

Social Society?
There are many issues that have been raised over the use of prosthetic legs in our society. One
of the main societal impacts of prosthetic legs is that it allows for people who are missing limbs to move
on with their lives, with some degree of “normality”. It gives people the opportunity to regain their
independence and make up for their “disability”. This is very important because it sometimes helps
people to avoid the negative psychological effects of living with a disability.
There are also some negative social impacts of using prosthetic legs. Sometimes people who use
them are made fun of and mocked, called nicknames like “pirate leg” or “Peggy”. But, one of the major
impacts of prosthetics in our society, and mainly on the individual people who use them, is the fact that
people who use prosthetic legs become completely dependent on the software. If the software fails,
people struggle to move on with their lives and find it difficult to overcome that dependence.
