Irshad Mobarak is an amazing Malaysian. He may be look big and tough but he is
gentle giant with a mighty love for the environment.
After having a dream in which he saw himself heal a sick woman with many
children, he gave up his job in a bank to help Mother Earth. He visited Langkawi twenty
years ago and fell in love with the place, so he has made it his mission to fight to protect
the rainforest, birds and plants on the island. His knowledge of the Great Hornbill is
astonishing because this species has a special place in his heart.
Today, he works with the Malaysian nature Society and other nature loving
organisations to help develop in the younger generation, a sense of ownership and
appreciation of the rich natural heritage in their surrounding. He conducts workshops and
nature tours around Langkawi, educating visitors with his large store of information
about birds and other species. He is also helping to educate fishermen on how to fish
without destroying the environment. His other projects include promoting conservation
among the islanders and developers. He is also fighting for the creation of wildlife
corridors because development has resulted in habitats being cut off from one another.
These corridor are vital for the survival of wildlife in Langkawi.
For all this work and more, he has been affectionately dubbed “The Jungle Wallah
of Langkawi”
