Mon: Students will choose a research project that will demonstrate their understanding of global warming. Tues: Conduct a survey to determine how much trash is created at school. Create a data table of both the amount and types of solid waste we generate. Make a bar graph of the Trash created at school. Wed: Construct a model trash layer landfill and test for water leaching . Develop a trash time line to compare trash decomposition rates. Thurs: Visit a local fish hatchery and determine how fish conservation impacts the Colorado River. Fri: Complete the video” Global Warming: 6 degrees of change” and record evidence and predictions
What students will do:
Mon: Library Research, “Global Warming Project”. Use Expert Space to locate articles on global warming, conservation and going green projects. Make notecards with citation on Expert Space. Tues: What is in our trash? Discussion, lab to dissect a bag of trash. Categorize into types, weight and graph your results. Watch the video, “Garbage’. Wed: What happens to trash that is thrown away? Create a land fill bottle using a lined and an un-lined layers for observation for then next 5 days. Make a timeline of trash decomposition rates. Thurs: Fieldtrip to Rifle Falls Fish Hatchery and Rifle Falls Park. Fri: Discuss impact of the Fish Hatchery on the local waterways. Complete Video, “Global warming: 6 Degrees of change.” And complete data table: evidence/prediction.
