Lesson Plan: Sorting Coin Money

• Lesson Overview:
o I will instruct students in learning the value of coin money and
how to sort them into pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. This
lesson is designed for a kindergarten class.
• Objective:
o My mathematical goal is to have students be able to recognize
each coin (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter) and as a result of
completing this lesson, all students will be able to name the
different types of coins, they will be able to match the actual coin
with the name of the coin, and know that each coin has a
different value.
o Students will be able to sort the given coins into their certain
sections on their assessment worksheet.
• Rationale:
o I am teaching this math lesson because it coincides with the unit
on money that my cooperating teacher is teaching.
o CORE Standard:
 Measurement and Data K.MD
• Classify objects and count the number of objects in
each category.
• Classify objects into given categories; count the
numbers of objects in each category and sort the
categories by count.
o This Lesson is important because students need to learn how to
sort and know the values of things we use in everyday life, like
money.
o This lesson helps improve student’s awareness of counting and
sorting objects by size, shape and value. It also helps them count
and remember the order of numbers.
• Lesson Elements:
o Introduction:
 The class will be sitting on the circle rug and I will be sitting
standing in front of them describing the activity. One of
the station tables in the class room will be designated for
the money sorting activity. Groups of approximately 6
students will be at the station at a time.
 “Boy and girls, we know what pennies and nickels look like
and how much they are worth. We are now going to look at
the two other types of coins: dimes and quarters. How are
they different than the other coins in size/color? How are
they similar to the other coins in size/color?”
 “There is a bucket of coins on your work table and work
sheets. Put the different coins in the space for them on
worksheet”
o Closure:
 Have students summarize what they just did
 “You all did a great job sorting your coins. Next time, we
will expand on this activity and begin adding the value of
the coins. We will also do addition and subtraction with the
different coins.
