From the Publisher
Dear Bookseller,
As you probably know, we divide the Felony & Mayhem line into various categories,
with a little icon (a chess piece, a magnifying glass, etc.) assigned to each. I stole
the idea for this from the old Penguin paperbacks—remember the color-coded ones?
The layout of the cover was always the same (extremely simple color-blocks), but the
color varied from one genre to another. Mysteries were dark green, I remember, while
“literary” fiction was orange, and biographies were blue. If you had just two minutes to
buy a book from the station kiosk before jumping on your train, the color-coding allowed
you to determine in an instant whether a book in question was the right kind of book for
you. (That distinctive Penguin layout, of course, offered a guarantee that it would be a
good book, since—at least in theory—Penguin published only good books.)
This past fall, we inaugurated a new category—“Wild Card”—and this spring, we are
publishing a second book (A Dark Dividing, p. 7) with a Wild Card icon. In truth, “Wild
Card” is just a pretentious way of saying that we don’t know how else to categorize
these books. As it happens both A Dark Dividing and The Truth About Unicorns (last
season’s Wild Card) have certain, well, creepy elements (though no creepier, I promise,
than you might find in one of Barbara Vine’s darker novels), but we have no intention
of making Wild Card home to vampires, zombies, and garden-variety undead. It will,
though, remain home to the very distinctly unusual, and we hope you’ll think of it the
next time a customer asks for “something I haven’t read before.”
