The best in intelligent mystery fiction

Sprin g 201 1
march –j uly
From the Publisher

Dear Bookseller,

As you probably know, we divide the Felony & Mayhem line into various categories,
with a little icon (a chess piece, a magnifying glass, etc.) assigned to each. I stole
the idea for this from the old Penguin paperbacks—remember the color-coded ones?
The layout of the cover was always the same (extremely simple color-blocks), but the
color varied from one genre to another. Mysteries were dark green, I remember, while
“literary” fiction was orange, and biographies were blue. If you had just two minutes to
buy a book from the station kiosk before jumping on your train, the color-coding allowed
you to determine in an instant whether a book in question was the right kind of book for
you. (That distinctive Penguin layout, of course, offered a guarantee that it would be a
good book, since—at least in theory—Penguin published only good books.)

This past fall, we inaugurated a new category—“Wild Card”—and this spring, we are
publishing a second book (A Dark Dividing, p. 7) with a Wild Card icon. In truth, “Wild
Card” is just a pretentious way of saying that we don’t know how else to categorize
these books. As it happens both A Dark Dividing and The Truth About Unicorns (last
season’s Wild Card) have certain, well, creepy elements (though no creepier, I promise,
than you might find in one of Barbara Vine’s darker novels), but we have no intention
of making Wild Card home to vampires, zombies, and garden-variety undead. It will,
though, remain home to the very distinctly unusual, and we hope you’ll think of it the
next time a customer asks for “something I haven’t read before.”

I promise you, she hasn’t read these.

See you in the stacks,

Maggie Topkis

The Mind Readers
The Mind Albert Campion #18
BY MARGERY ALLINGHAM
Readers Sam Ferris is an ordinary English schoolboy. Well, except
for a few things. One: His father is an eminent scientist,
based on a military “research island” off the English coast.
Two: Sam is about to be interviewed by a solicitor, giving
evidence, in a serious legal matter, against one of his favorite

Margery Allingham teachers. And three: Sam can read minds. But there’s a four:
Sam’s uncle is Albert Campion. And Sam’s story, in all its
seemingly unrelated elements, gives his Uncle Albert quite a
lot to be curious about.

The Rival Queens

Countess Ashby de la Zouche #2
BY FIDELIS MORGAN

The 17th century is limping slowly to a close, but Countess

Ashby de la Zouche and her maid, the faithful Alpiew, are
dashing around, plying their trade as scandal-mongers
to only the finest London papers. Happily, scandals—
goodness!—are falling in her lap like ripe plums. The best,
of late, concern the ladies and gentlemen of the theatrical
profession, who are thrilled whenever their names appear
in print, and damn the context. But scandal —naughty, de-
licious, of little real weight—takes on some gravitas when
the Countess and Alpiew are hired to solve the murder of a
popular leading lady. And things get yet more serious when
they stumble into a mess of corruption with connections to
the very furthest reaches of Society.

About the author

After a proper convent education, Sarah Rayne published her first novel in 1982, and spent the next
20 years or so writing extremely well reviewed horror and fantasy fiction under the names “Frances
Gordon” and “Bridget Wood,” respectively. A Dark Dividing, the second of the psychological suspense
novels she now writes as Sarah Rayne, was originally published in the UK in 2004, and though it got
some limited distribution in the U.S., this Felony & Mayhem edition marks Rayne’s true U.S. debut.

Toyshop BY EDMUND CRISPIN

Richard Cadogan is at loose ends in Oxford, very late at

Edmund Crispin night. Charmed by the window display of an old-fashioned

toyshop, he is worried to find the door unlocked; surely the
owner should be alerted to the potential for danger. And so
Cadogan slips into the darkened store and up the narrow
stairway to the apartment above. But rather than a snoring
toyman, he finds a very dead old lady, the marks of murder
still livid on her neck. But when Cadogan returns with the
coppers, the toyshop...has disappeared. This, it seems, is
actually a matter for Gervase Fen.

The small mining town of Burrthorpe is economically de-

pressed and mistrustful of strangers—and cops. The return
of handsome and volatile Colin Farr, whose dead father
was once implicated in a child murder case, seems to dig
up all the old troubles and bring on some new ones. Farr
flirts dangerously with Ellie Pascoe and quickly becomes a

It’s midsummer in British Columbia, and it’s murderously

hot. For the vacationing Karl Alberg, that becomes more
than a metaphor when he discovers a body on the beach,
fresh from a fatal plunge into the icy, all-too-appealing
waves. Back home in the town of Sechelt, where Alberg
is the chief of police, it’s clear that the heat is bringing out
the crazies, most recently in the form of a tribe of violent
rednecks who are loony enough to make Alberg yearn a
little for his days as a big-city cop.

The Truth About Unicorns

by BONNIE JONES REYNOLDS

Robert Frost meets Stephen King in the 1920s. The rest of

the world may be doing the Charleston and swilling bath-
tub gin, but for this small farming community in upstate
New York, the Jazz Age might as well be playing out on the
moon. Around here, folks’ concerns pretty much stay the
same as one decade slides into another.
And why shouldn’t they? It’s not like anything important
really changes. The cows still need milking. The Parmalee
family curse has been in place for ages. Carrie’s been evil
from the cradle. Red-haired women have never brought any-
thing but trouble to this town. And there sure ain’t nothing
new about what teenagers are getting up to in the woods.

Child’s Play
Dalziel & Pascoe #9
by reginald hill

There shouldn’t be anything unusual about the death of

an elderly widow, until a man appears at her graveside,
claiming to be her long-lost son. He’s entitled to shed
all the tears he likes, but whether he’s entitled to her
substantial fortune is another question. It’s a poser, but
one Fat Andy can grapple with — much more easily than
he can deal with the decision on the part of the resolutely
boring Sgt. Wield to come busting out of the closet.

Paganini’s Ghost
Gianni and Guastafeste #2
by PAUL ADAM

It’s the most exciting concert Cremona has seen in years:

The headliner is a brilliant young Russian playing a violin
once owned by the 19th-century master Nicolo Paganini.
But the triumphal performance is immediately overshad-
owed by the murder of one of its sponsors. Solving the
murder will require a journey into musical history, and to
make that journey, Cremona’s police-chief will once more
require the assistance of Gianni Castiglione, an elderly
charmer and only mildly larcenous expert in violins.

Naming the Bones

by LOUISE WELSH

Professor Murray Watson is rather a sad sack. His family,

his career, his affair with a colleague’s wife…even drinking
no longer offers much joy. It would be nice to say that his
passions have been channeled into scholarship, but the
truth is, his research is increasingly feeling like a chore,
and a pointless one at that. Archie Lunan, the poet who
drowned these 30 years ago off a remote stretch of Scottish
coast? The more Murray learns about Lunan, the more
he looks like just another drunk with a knack for a nice
phrase. And that tragic death? Some tedious sense of honor
compels Murray to go poking around northern Scotland,
just to finish up the sodding research. But really, was it
such a tragedy after all?

FIRST U.S. EDITION
Blotto, Twinks, and the Ex-King’s Daughter
Blotto, Twinks #1
by SIMON BRETT

About the Book

It’s that glorious period between the two
world wars, and the exiled king of Mitteleu-
ropa is celebrating with a visit to Tawcester
Towers, the ancestral home of the Dukes
of Tawcester. When the ex-king’s daughter
is kidnapped, noblesse obliges Blotto, the
Duke’s brave and handsome son to drive off
to the rescue. Sadly, he is rather staggeringly
stupid – with a nickname like “Blotto,” what
could one expect? – but his sister, Twinks,
got all the family brains, and she is inclined
to be helpful. And in more good news for the
purloined princess, Blotto’s devoted valet is
coming along for the ride. Plus, they’ve got a
really swell car.

Guide to the Categories
Most mystery readers we know have fairly specific tastes, so we’ve divided the Felony
& Mayhem line into categories. To make it easier for you to recommend books to your
customers—and easier for your customers to find books that match their tastes—we’re
including an “icon” on the cover of every Felony & Mayhem title, to identify the category
of that particular book, as follows (please note that all Felony & Mayhem books are
trade paper unless noted otherwise).

British Set in or around the UK, these feature the highly literate,
often witty prose that fans of British mysteries demand.

espionage Spies, spooks and conspiracy theories, from

World War I to the present.

Foreign Intricately observed, richly atmospheric settings anywhere

in the world outside of England and the U.S.A.

hard boiled Mean streets and meaner bad guys, with a cop or
a PI usually carrying the story and landing a few punches besides.

Historical From the Ancient World to the 1940s, and

everything in between.

Traditional Classy cozies with little gunplay or gore, but often

a fair amount of humor and—always—an intrepid amateur sleuth.

vintage Originally published prior to about 1965, these promise the

kind of twisty, ingenious puzzles beloved by fans of Agatha Christie.

wild card We can’t promise these will press particular buttons, but
we do guarantee they will be unusual, well written, and worth a reader’s time.
