A cold rolled steel cup with an inside radius 30 mm and a thickness 3 mm is to

be drawn from a blank of radius 40 mm. The shear stress and the maximum
allowable stress of the material can be taken as 210 N/mm 2 and 600 N/mm2,
respectively.

(i) Determine the drawing force, assuming that the coefficient of friction
µ=0.1 and β=0.05.
(ii) Determine the minimum possible radius of the cup which can be
drawn from the given blank without causing a fracture.

Solution:

PART A:

Blank Holding Force FH= βπr2K

=0.05*π*402*210

=52778 N.

Now,

σr (at r = rd )=[( µ* FH)/(2*π*K*rj*t)+ln(rj /rd)]*2K

= (0.1*52778)/(40*3* π)+2*210*ln(40/30)

= (14+80.8) N/mm2.

= 94.8 N/mm2.

Now,

σZ= σr*eµπ/2

= 94.8*e0.1π/2 N/mm2.

=110.9 N/mm2.
Drawing Force

F=2* σZ* π *rp*t.

=2*110.9*π*30*3.

=62680 N.

PART B:

In this case

σZ= 600 N/mm2.

i.e 600= σr*e0.05*π=512.8 N/mm2.

i.e ln(40/rp+3)=512.8/420 –(0.1*52778)/(2*π*210*40*3) = 1.221-0.033

= 1.188.

i.e rp=9.2 mm.
