KMEM 4381, Coursework 2: Turbulent Flow around a Glider.

Using GAMBIT and FLUENT, investigate the flow around a glider. Carry out a
literature review on related topic. The CAD data for the glider is stored in folder
‘glider_CAD’ in SOLIDWORK and VRML format. Use SOLIDWORK to open the files
and save the files in ACIS format. Open the ACIS file with a suitable mesh generator and
construct finite volume meshes/grids based on the imported ACIS file. Predict turbulent
flow around the glider. Work in pairs/groups of two. Each group will use a different
turbulence modeling strategy as listed below:

Group 1:
LES

Group 2:
Spalart-Allmaras

Group 3:
k-epsilon

Group 4:
k-omega

Group 5:
DES

Group 6:
Reynolds Stress Transport Model

Experimental results (aerodynamic coefficient values) from wind tunnel testing are given
in file glider_windtunnel_results.xls . Use MUCL differencing scheme and hex cells.
Compare values obtained from the computations with the experimental results. Describe
the flow structure around the glider using scalar and vector plot. Investigate the effect of
grid sizes on the accuracy of the results (50,000 , 250,000 and 1,000,000 cells). Based, on
the literature review, state and explain the novel features of your study.

Divide your report into five chapters, as listed below:

1. Introduction
2. Methodology
3. Results and Discussion
4. Conclusion
5. Appendix
Store all figures in the Appendix section. The maximum number of pages for this report
(excluding the Appendix section) is 10 (Font size 11, Line spacing 1). Burn:
1. A copy of your report in .doc format.
2. A copy of all the figures in the report in .jpeg format.
