English is spoken in more parts of the world than any other language. It is also spoken by more
people than any other language except Mandarin Chinese.
At present about 25% of the world’s population speaks English. About 350 million people speak
English as their native language and about 600 million people speak English as a second language.
English is widely used in politics. It is the official language of the United Nations. Leaders from
different countries communicate through the English language.
English is also the language of science and technology. For example, about 60% of the world´s
scientific and technical magazines and journals are in English. For these reasons, millions of people
want to learn English today.

Did you know that 80% of the information on the world´s computers is in English? Throughout the
world, English is also the language of commerce. About 50% of all the companies in Europe
conduct their business in English. In addition, about 75% of the world´s mail is in English.
English is the language of entertainment. A lot of TV programmes and films are made in English
and appear all over the world. English is also the language of sports and other important events. It
is, for example, the language of the Olympics, the World Cup and the Miss Universe competition.
Finally, English is widely used for air and sea travel. Every pilot and ship captain has to speak
English and people in airports, hotels and tourist resorts all over the world communicate in
English.
