Splits:
Flame of forest
The 7-9 cm long pendulous pods are yellow-brown (when matured) and contain hard elongates seeds. The ripe pod breaks
longitudinally into halves releasing the seeds.
Jewelweed, Balsam
Notable for having seed pods that burst when touched thus its common name ‘Touch-me-not’.
Curved hanging green pods that turn brown and curl up as they dry. The sides of the pods dry at different rates and this creates
tension which causes the pods to split open, catapulting their small bright red seeds in all directions. The seeds are usually found
littered under the tree.
Rubber
Each three-lobed fruit contains three seeds, one in each lobe. When it still on the tree, catapulting away the smooth seeds with their
distinctive light brown patches.
Water:
Coconut
A coconut has a smooth outer rind, a fibrous husk and a stony central layer pitted with 3 small ‘eyes’ of soft tissue, through one of
which a young shoot and root will emerge at germination. The coconut seed lied inside the stony shell. The embryo, only a few mm
long, is embedded under one of the ‘eyes’ in the white fleshy edible layer. The rich supply of food and water in the coconut enables it
to last for a long time on its watery journey. Once it reaches land, the embryo germinates.
When the fruits fall, the thni outer rind decays and withers away, exposing a thick fibrous husk. The [poisonous]fruits are light and
buoyant, and are dispersed by ocean currents.
Lotus
The fruit is a conical-shaped pod filled with seeds, each seed in its own socket or hole. When the seeds ripen, they become loose
and when the pod tips down, the seeds are released into the water.
Mangrove
Some seeds of mangrove plants germinate while they are still attached to the parent plant. Roots develop from the fruit giving the
seedling a sword-like appearance. The seedling is heavier at the root end than at the leafy end. If the tide is low when the seedling
falls into the water, it anchors itself in the mud. If the tide is high, the heavier root holds it upright as it floats on the water. The root tip
eventually hits mud and a new mangrove plant begins to grow.
Wind:
Dandelion
The flower matures into a globe of fine filaments that are usually distributed by wind, carrying away th tiny fruit that contains the seed.
This globe is called the ‘blow flower’ of ‘dandelion clock’, and blowing it apart is a popular pastime for children. The number of blows
required to completely rid th clock of its seeds is deemed to be the time of day.
A long spear-shaped grass with a white mid-rib in the centre and long, fluffy-white seed heads. Sexual reproduction through seed
and asexual reproduction through rhizome [a horizontally growing stem which is at or below the soil level].
Animals/ Human:
Leaves fold up and droop if something touches it. Flowers resemble little purplish puffs; seed pods have stiff bristles along edges.
Seed pods are 2-3 cm long and contain 1-5 seeds which are small and flattened.
