There are many opportunities to get fresh air and take care of our health this spring. Taking a short walk for 20 min or more can help your body more than you think, A 20 or 30 minute walk will help your heart health, help to control your diabetes blood sugar, help improve your over all feeling of well being. So hop out of that winter cocoon and get some fresh air out side this spring! ‘The exercise classes have been going well. The final day for the classes will be April 26th. (bolded sections updated for this blitz) May 23 - June 5, 2011 + Last year in Oregon passenger vehicle crashes, one third of children injured under age eight (28%) were not using child seats or boosters and half of all vehicle occupants killed (44%) were not using appropriate safety restraints, Those most at risk of dying unrestrained are younger males. + Recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) research suggests that most of Oregon's unbuckled fatalities occur on weekday afternoons and between the hours of 6 pm - 6am on ‘weekends. NHTSA is encouraging states to conduct night time enforcement of safoty belt laws as well as day time during the ‘upcoming nationwide Click It or Ticket law enforcement campaign, running Monday, May 23 through Sunday, June § this year. + Speeding and driver impairment are the factors most often leading to serious injury crashes, When either ofthese factors is present, belt use and effectiveness can be greatly reduced + During Click It or Ticket in Oregon, approximately one hundred law ‘enforcement agencies will conduct federally-funded overtime ‘enforcement to emphasize proper use of safety belts, belt- positioning booster seats, and the importance of driving safe speeds. + ODOT's Transportation Safety Division would like to alert drivers to the latest national "best practico” recommendations for child passenger safety. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) announced new recommendations on March 21, 2011 which advise parents to keep toddlers in rear-facing car seats until age two or until they reach the maximum upper height and weight limits for their seat. The policy also advises that most children should ride in booster seat until they are four-feet-nine inches tall and are between ‘eight and twelve years old, + While its not the law in Oregon, itis strongly recommended, by the AAP. land NHTSA, that children aged twelve and under ride in rear seating positions, Research indicates that such rear seating reduces the risk of injury by 379% for that age group. TOBACCO PROGRAM NEWS KICKING THE TOBACCO HABIT: Regardless of how long you have used tobacco products, quitting can now greatly reduce serious risks on your health. Even reducing the amount you smoke appears to help. One study showed that smokers who reduced their smoking habit to less than half a pack a day had only three times the risk of developing tobacco related illnesses out of ten times the risk. 7 Tips to quitting smoking ~ no matter how many times you've tried before! Set a Quit Date Expect to feel miserable—give yourself a few weeks to feel back to normal. |. Remove smoking triggers—Remove anything that reminds you of smoking— Try nicotine replacements—Quit line offers free replacement treatments. . Know why you crave tobacco—read books on addiction and personality types—get to know yourself. . Get support or counseling—take stress relief classes, exercise classes, talk to your family members for support. 7.
