QL. (a) Explain the importance of dimensionless groups of variables in the test and analysis of
performance characteristic of turbomachinery. Important variables in turbomachine
performance are shown in Table 1. Of the several possible groups that can be formed,
the most useful combinations of variables are the flow coefficient @ and the head
coefficient y. Define @ and y.

(b) Calculate the dimensionless and the dimensional values of specific speed Ns for a
centrifugal water pump whose design-point performance is the following:
Q=10000L/min = H=10m N=5S001pm

Q2. (a) Characteristic curves for a given pump are determined by test, and they consist primarily of a
plot of head H as a function of volume rate of flow Q. Sketch the typical characteristic curve for
a pump. Discuss the occurrence of the phenomenon of cavitation in centrifugal pumps
and the effects on the head-capacity (H-Q) curves. How can cavitation be avoided?

(b) A pump discharges 2000 L /s when running at 200 rpm. The outlet vane angle is 20° and
the ratio of external to intemal diameter is 2:1. The centrifugal impeller has a diameter
of 1.0 m and the outer peripheral area is 0.5 m?, Calculate the hydraulic efficiency. The
velocity triangle at outlet for the pump is as shown in Figure 1.

(b) A Pelton wheel is supplied with 2000 L/min of water under a head of 100 m. The wheel
rotates at 700 rpm and the velocity coefficient of the nozzle is 0.9, The efficiency of the
wheel is 80 % and the ratio of bucket speed to jet speed is 0.4. Determine the following:
@ Speed of the wheel
(i) Wheel to jet diameter ratio
(iii) Power developed

Q4. A compressor efficiency is 0.80 and the mechanical efficiency is 0.90. The air leaving
the impeller has a radial velocity of 100 m/s makes an angle of 24° with the axial
direction. Refer to Figure 2. The impeller tip speed is 400 mvs. Find the slip factor,
overall pressure ratio, and power required to drive the compressor. Neglect power input
factor and assume y = 1.4, Toi = 300 K,, and the mass flow rate is 6 ke/s.
