He didn´t want to start the race without his red T-shirt.

( a mí me gusta más así, pero si lo que quieres es usar el verbo to be dejalo así)

¿Estuvieron Juan y María en casa el domingo?

Were Juan and María at home on Sunday? Did John and Mary stay at home on
sunday?(lo mismo digo)

No, estuvieron en la piscina.

No, they were at the swimming pool.

Yo estuve en el cine. Había un festival de películas.

I was at the cinema. There was a film festival.

¿Dónde estuviste ayer? Estuve en mi casa.

Where were you yesterday? I was at home.
