PART I

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

2
Introduction

Program and Project Management

It is quite common for the terms “program
management” and “project management” to be
used interchangeably. Unfortunately, this serves
to reinforce the misunderstanding of the
distinctions between the two disciplines, and to
overshadow the importance of program
management in the achievement of business
objectives.
3
What’s the difference?

 program is a bunch of  project has a beginning

projects with no and an end delivering a
definite end product
 program will always  project may or may not
have projects be a part of a program
 program management  project management is
is strategic in nature tactical in nature
 project management
 program management
focuses on a single
is entirely cross
function
functional

4
Program Hierarchy

5
Why does identifying the differences between the roles matter?

oPeople need to know the definition of their roles and what their duties involve in order to
perform their jobs successfully. If an organization does not have a clear view of these
expectations, there is no way to communicate them to its employees.

o An employee without clear expectations lacks direction, and that makes it very difficult
for organizations to train and develop employees to the competencies that fuel high
performance.

oPROGRAM MANAGER IS A ROLE THAT MANY PROJECT MANAGERS ASPIRE

TO,THAT DENOTES SENIORITY AND COMPENSATION.

6
CONCLUSION

• Even though the terms program management and project

management are often used interchangeably, they are
related but distinctly different disciplines.

• Program management integrates the individual elements

of the projects to achieve a common objective, such as the
delivery of the "whole product" to the marketplace.

• Employing both program and project
management is a powerful approach to
developing products that enable the
achievement of intended business objectives.

17
Background
For the past few years, the metal
fabrication and construction
industries have faced a challenge
in finding skilled welders. With
approximately 500,000 welders in
the workforce, the average welder
today is in his or her mid-50s and
nearing retirement. With welders
retiring at twice the pace of new
welders coming into the field, it's
anticipated that in the years to
come, we will have a significant
shortfall of qualified welders.
18
Program Objectives
The program seek to build the
capacity to train welders to develop
the skills required to succeed in high-
growth, high-demand industries.

—it is vital to rebuild our

welding workforce in
promoting the U.S.
workforce's full
potential.
19
Program Strategy
New Era Project Management will design a high
level welding program that will be a step
above what other welding programs out
there already are offering. We are focusing
on more than learning a trade but more on
building a career. Our program will focus on 4
main area and they are:
• Certification to different processes and
procedures
• Educate about the different weld defects, their
causes and preventions
• Educate about the different methods of weld
testing and inspection
• Job security to industries demands

20
Cost Analysis
•Cost Start-up requirements and Expenses

•Classroom and student workstations $50,000.00
•Tools and Equipments $120,000.00
•Reliable fume extraction $100,000.00
•Facilities Rental & Renovation $150,000.00
•Staff Training and Development $10,000.00
•Salaries $50,000.00
•Legal/Accounting $10,000.00
•Other Professional Services $35,000.00

•Total Start up $525,000.00

21
INDUSTRY DEMAND

22
Welding School

23
Welding & Fabrication Technology

Students will complete

the AWS certification
exam for plate and
structural welds, and
the ASME certification
exam for pipe fitting
and piping systems

24
Welder Training, Certification, and Licensing

Most employers today prefer to hire workers

who already have either work experience or
some level of formal training in the trade.
This type of training is available in many
types of postsecondary institutions, such as
community colleges, vocational-technical
institutes, and private welding schools.
Courses in mechanical drawing, blueprint
reading, shop mathematics, physics,
chemistry, and metallurgy are helpful to
all prospective welders. An understanding
of electricity and knowledge of computers
are of particular importance to those
aspiring to be automated welders.

25
CONCLUSION

The most significant risk is assessed as

the ability to qualify and obtain any
available grant money that would
need nearly $525,000.00 for a start up
cost to cover building renovations,
welding equipment and rent. Once
funding is in place, it is recommended
to proceed with this project.
