Ferdinand makes United a better

attacking force
The Red Devils secured two
vital away goals in the
Veltins-Arena during their
Champions League semi-
final first-leg against
Bundesliga side Schalke on
Tuesday night and have not
conceded an away goal in
Europe for the entire
tournament.

Now the former Old Trafford

defender has claimed that
when the former England
captain partners the
Serbian, United can play the
ball from the back rather than hitting long balls to the strikers.Speaking to the Alan
Brazil Sports Breakfast show, Berg said: “Rio Ferdinand gives United that extra
dimension offensively, they are much more able to play for the back and I think that
was the key against Schalke.

“If they’d played like they did against Marseille [a 0-0 draw when Rio Ferdinand was
missing], they were not able to get the game going. Van der Sar, Ferdinand and Vidic
are all calm on the ball and setting up the play nicely. United did really, really well.”

When asked about the Red Devils’ 2-0 away win against Schalke, Berg said: “There
was a difference in class between the two leagues last night, it shows the gap
between the Premier League and the Bundesliga.

“United have the experience and have some fantastic players and were far too good
for Schalke yesterday.

"It’s one thing being the better team, but the way that United played yesterday it was
fantastic to see and to play at such a level and such a quality at the semi-final stage
of the Champions League is fantastic for Manchester United.”
