Checkpoint: Patient Compliance

What patient compliance issues are evident in this scenario?

A patient compliance issue I noticed in the asthma scenario was when the

mother threw the medication in the trash. He reason for doing so and rescheduling

another appt with another doctor was because she was not satisfied with the doctor’s

assessment and diagnosis.

What communication problems are contributing to the patient’s lack of compliance?

The doctor ignored the parent by accepting a phone call in the middle of the

patients visit. The doctor failed to comply as well, by not listening to the parent’s

concerns and not describing verbal instructions on how to administer the medication.

How might the caregiver improve communication in a way that would promote patient

compliance?

One way the caregiver can improve communication that would promote patient

compliance is by listening to the patient’s concerns, including the patient in their

treatment, and most importantly by explaining their diagnoses and treatment. The

caregiver could also offer a friendly greet when introducing themselves. Another way to

improve communication is to avoid answering phone calls while in the presence of a

patient. This could also be a violation of thee HIPPA LAW.
