Hans Jürgen Suerig born July 18, 1944 in
Neumannshoh, Schlesia, Germany to Hans Suerig and Hedwig Mross Suerig and died February 23, 2011 at his home in Springdale, Utah. His parents and brother Siegfried (Sieg) Gornik preceded him in death. Hans spent his elementary school years in Recklinghausen Germany. He immigrated to the United States in April 1957 and became a U.S. citizen in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 1, 1969. He married Bonnie Weyher on December 28, 1974 in Salt Lake City, UT. He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Bonnie, four children, William Christopher, Tiffany, Douglas Benjamin (Rachel), and Charlie Elizabeth (Bryan) Bird, and four grandchildren, Ginger Naomi Farnsworth, Zebadiah Maximilian Farnsworth, Jonas Zion Suerig, and Lillian Gabrielle Bird. Hans proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967 and was honorably discharged. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1975 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His first engineering job was at the University of Utah with Dr. Steve Jarvik, inventor of the first permanent total artificial heart. He worked as an engineer in Utah, Oklahoma, and Texas. He began working for the National Park Service in Zion National Park in 2002 where he was still employed as a Visitor Use Assistant at the time of his death. Hans was a member of the Zion Canyon Lions Club. He enjoyed camping , family gatherings, travel, tennis, boat racing, Nascar races, Utah Jazz games, and Golden Eagles Hockey. Hans loved his friends and puttering around in his garage; he could fix anything. One of his favorite pastimes was spending time at the river with his dogs (Rufus, Pedro and Scooby). A memorial service for Hans will be held Saturday, April 30th at 10:00 a.m. at the South Campground Amphitheater in Zion National Park. Arrangements under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
