Microreactors technology

ABSTRACT
Microreactor technology is currently redefining the way how to carry out reactions and optimize them
for high throughout in chemical engineering world. In the last decade, Microreactor Technology (MRT)
as a new concept in chemical engineering has demonstrated the advantages of micro structured devices
for chemical reactions impressively [Jahnisch, K.; Hessel, V.; Löwe, H.; Baerns, M. Angew. Chem.
Int. Ed. 2004, 43, 406.,,,, Watts, P.; Haswell, S. Chem. Eng. Technol. 2005, 28, 290.].
This paper will focus and will explore microreactor’s construction material, design and scale up concept
industrial use of microreactor technology along with some examples reported.

The various reactors

are made out of different materials, have
various channel geometries, diverse mixing
and heat exchange structures, and last but
not least have distinctive scale-up strategies.
Indeed, a claimed scale-up strategy
associated with this technology is often the
device parallelization / numbering-up
approach (6, 7).
Micro- and nanotechnology are currently areas of rapid growth with a huge field of applications like
chemical engineering and process technology and pharmaceutical synthesis.

Soon we will see fully integrated microchemical systems for reaction optimization that include the
capability to work up reactions and to carry out multi-step transformations in series. The commercial
availability of the devices and reactors such systems will eventually be available in all laboratories, in
academia and industry, and will revolutionize the chemical engineering prospect.
