Voltage Profile Improvement In Electric Power System: A Case Study Of Central Region

(C1 Area) Pea Power System, Thailand

Abstract

In the context of economic activities increasing in recent years in Thailand, result in rapid
growth in electrical demand, especially, in central region. Incorporate with the absence of
reactive power compensation devices in sub-transmission network, most of 115 kV
substations have poor voltage profiles and high system losses. Consequently, result in poor
voltage quality to the end users.

This study presents voltage profile improvement of 115 kV substations and loss reduction by
adopting of optimal capacitor placement method, then evaluates the cost-benefit and
conduct an economic analysis. Further studies have been conducted to see the effectiveness
of an SVC to perform the same “job”.

The study focuses on the C1 area, central region of PEA power system with the help of
NEPLAN Electric power engineering program package. The result given from NEPLAN show
the optimal placement and optimal size of capacitor that should be installed in order to
achieve voltage profile improvement with minimum power losses.

SVC is applied for Suwintawong and Prachinburi2 partial network as two cases study and
found that SVC can be used to perform the same job as capacitor but capacitor give more
economically effectiveness and more suitable for the study area than SVC.
