How VOIP works

The devices mentioned above works as follows:

1. At the source or the end system the spoken voice or analog signal is
converted to digital signal using analog to digital converter (ADC)
technique.
2. Then follow by speech compression. It is the process of reducing the
size of the data (voice).
3. The signaling server has to do the following :
• identify the destination IP address
• Establish communication with the Voice gateway, the gateway is
then responsible to connect the call either through the PSTN or
IP network to reach the other party.

4. Lastly the receiving end device reassemble the packet and convert
them to analog signals (Voice) so that it can be hear clearly
VOIP could be PC to PC communication, PC to phone, and Phone to phone

I. PC to PC communication: Using the computer to call another

computer in the network, these are programmable applications that
work like a phone, these applications are known as Computer
Telephony integration (CTI)
II. PC to Phone Communication: The CTI application communicates
with an analog phone.
III. Phone to Phone Communication: An IP phone or analog phone
communicates one another.
