quality of material produced.
 Use a variety of media (e.g., computerized card
catalogues, encyclopedias) for research.
• 1.6 Speaking and Listening
C. 1.6.5 Speak using skills appropriate to formal speech
situations.
 Use complete sentences.
 Pronounce words correctly.
 Use appropriate volume.
 Pace speech so that it is understandable.
 Adjust content for different audiences (e.g., fellow
classmates, parents).
 Speak with a purpose in mind.
D. Contribute to discussions
 Ask relevant questions
 Respond with relevant information or opinions to
questions asked.
 Listen to and acknowledge the contributions of others.
 Adjust involvement to encourage equitable
participation.
 Give reasons for opinions.
 Summarize, when prompted.

Academic Standards for Science and Technology

3.1 Unifying Themes

• 3.1.4 C. Illustrate patterns that regularly occur and reoccur in nature.
 Use knowledge of natural patterns to predict next occurrences
(e.g., seasons, leaf patterns, lunar phases).

3.4 Physical Science, Chemistry, and Physics

• 3.4.4 D. Describe the composition and structure of the universe and the earth’s place in
it.
 Recognize earth’s place in the solar system.
 Explain and illustrate the causes of seasonal changes.
 Identify planets in our solar system and their general
characteristics.
 Describe the solar system motions and use them to explain
time (e.g., days, seasons), major lunar phases and eclipses.

Assessment Anchors for Reading:

• R4.A.1 Understand fiction appropriate to grade level.
 R4.A.1.2 Identify and apply word recognition skills.
 R4.A.1.3 Make inferences and draw conclusions based on
text.

• R4.A.2 Understand nonfiction appropriate to grade.
 R4.A.2.1 Identify and interpret the meaning of vocabulary in
nonfiction.
 R4.A.2.2 Identify and apply word recognition skills.

 R4.A.2.3 Make inferences and draw conclusions based on

text.
 R4.A.2.4 Identify and explain main ideas and relevant
details.

 R4.A.2.5 Summarize a nonfictional text as a whole.

 R4.A.2.6 Identify the genre of text.

• R.4.B.1 Understand components within and between texts.

 R4B.1.1 Identify, interpret, compare, and describe

components of fiction and literary nonfiction.

 R4B.1.2 Make connections between texts.

Assessment Anchors for Science:

• S4.D.3 Composition and Structure of the Universe

 S4.D.3.1 Describe Earth’s relationship to the Sun and the
Moon.

Lesson Objective(s)
(Stated in observable and measurable terms)

• Using Glogster and a teacher selected video the students about the solar system, the
students will create a virtual poster representing information acquired while watching the video.
• The students will be able to use information from their Photo Stories to help provide
information for their virtual poster.
Assessment Plan
(What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?)

• The students will be assessed by a teacher made rubric.

• The students will be given the rubric before they begin the assignment.
• The rubric will assess the students’ representation of the solar system as well as their ability to
use Glogster accurately.
Materials:

• Tutorial videos for how to use Glogster and its components

• Computers with Internet access for each student
• A projector to show the short video of each component of Glogster (audio with projector)
• Glogster account
• Rubric
• Paper and pencils
• Student Photo Stories
Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs:
• For the student with visual impairments, the directions and components for using Glogster will
be displayed in a larger font.
• For the struggling student, the computer teacher, classroom teacher, and support teacher will be
available to provide more one on one help with creating the Glogster.

Enrichment Techniques:

For students who are in need of enrichment, they will be responsible for helping monitor their
peers upon completion of their assignment. These students will also have to write in their journal
which planet they like the best and why.
Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able
to participate in the lesson):

Provide the rubric that will be used to assess the students at the beginning of the lesson. This
will allow the students to see what is expected of them from their final outcome. The teacher will
chunk this assignment for the students that may have trouble finishing it in one class period. The
teacher will also provide the students with a note card that has the student’s login for Glogster and
directions to view the tutorials again if needed.

Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set:

To begin the day’s lesson, the teacher will show a short video clip of the planets in our solar
system. The students will be asked to take notes during the video on the names of the planets and some
facts that they found to be interesting. The students will be told that they will be watching the video
two times and then using the information that they have written down to make a virtual poster about the
planets in our solar system.

Detailed Teaching Sequence:

(Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred)

• This lesson may take some students more than 1 day to complete.
• After the students have watched the solar system video two times I would explain the project of
making a virtual poster in more detail.
• Explain to the students that they will be using a program called Glogster to create a virtual
poster about our solar system.
• I would then have the students get our paper and pencil to follow along with the tutorials of how
to use Glogster while I was using the projector for all students to see.
• After the tutorials I would log in to Glogster with my account and show the students the
different features that are accessible to use.
• After demonstrating all of the features the students would then be given their note card that has
their Glogster log in.
• As a class we will access Glogster together. I will remind students to use their rubric to make
sure they have all components of the assignment.
• The students will be given time to explore the Glogster features and begin their poster.

Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities

• Assessment of the Glogster poster will be done using a teacher created rubric.
• Students will be assessed on creativity, accurate information on the topic, and correct use of the
application.
• After the teacher has assessed the students work they will be allowed to go back into their
poster and make the necessary changes.
• The student will then publish their work and print it out.

Closure:

To end this lesson the students will have the opportunity to view their peers work around the
classroom. The Glogster posters will be displayed for the students to view. The students will be asked
to evaluate three of their classmate’s posters. The students will have to provide each poster they
evaluate with one thing they really liked and one thing that they could improve upon.
