SUSANA MARTINEZ GOVERNOR May 13, 2011 Dear Friend, We made great progress this legislative session, but there is much work to be done. And I am asking you to join me as a Charter Member of Susana-PAC to ensure we continue turning New Mexico around. First, the good news of what we accomplished in our first few months... We succeeded in getting our financial house in order. I inherited a massive budget deficit that many argued could only be closed by raising taxes. But we proved them wrong. We balanced the budget without raising taxes. Instead, we cut spending. I started by reducing the number of political appointees in state government. And brought government salaries back in line. eliminated the two personal chef positions at the Governor's Residence and cut spending there by 55%. And we are getting rid of the ultimate symbol of waste and excess ~ we are selling the state’s luxury jet. We took on the Hollywood lobbyists and trimmed the taxpayer-funded subsidy given to movie-makers. Getting our financial house in order was step-one to getting our economy turned around. Now, we are cutting regulations to make it easier for small businesses to create jobs. And we will pursue tax reforms that will make New Mexico more competitive with our neighbors. We also fought for real school reform. By cutting waste in the administration, we directed more money into the classroom and away from bureaucrats. But throwing more money at the system is not the answer. We need to end the culture of low expectations and start measuring success based on student performance. That’s why I am proud to have signed legislation that will start grading schools from A to F. This will help parents and the community better understand how schools are performing. And it will allow us to focus on those schools and turn them around. You know I have always been a strong advocate for border security. And we took big steps in the right direction. [signed an executive order that ends the sanctuary policy in New Mexico for illegal immigrants who commit crimes. PO Box 15117 | Las Cruces, NM_88004 Paid for by Susana-PAC.
