Dear Prof Mehdi Riazi,

My name is Ryan Peters and I’m a current student in LING902. I feel I should inform you of my
situation. I live in Fukushima Japan which as you probably know has been horribly affected by the
recent disaster. My preganant wife and I have managed to escape today and are staying west of
Tokyo. This was a terrifying task. I’m not sure how long we will be away but I don’t feel
comfortable going back there yet.

I’m not asking for any consideration but I will not be able to contribute to the lessons for a while.
Once my family is completely safe I hope to return home and resume my studies. I was a week
ahead in my reading so I’m confident I can catch up easily.
