Diante do exposto

FROM THE VISUAL TO THE SYMBOLIC:
The Architectural Culture of Wood in Parana State
Given the suggested theme "Architecture in Transition" the study presented here shows a decoding of a
specific sign - wooden architecture of Paraná - considering the image and representation. In the current state
of the contemporary world where the territories become global, the rescue and propagation of a particular
culture manifests itself as a major challenge before the preservation of local identities. This study
investigates the role of spatial forms - physical and symbolic - responsible for the identity construction of the
postmodern individual. In this light it is stated that among the many ways man's position in space, whether in
material or subjective bias, the architecture has to contribute to this action as a way to signify the space,
adding symbolic value in order to strength their ties that connect the individual to his place. In this sense an
interesting analysis can be found within the proposal by Bakhtin (1997) when to this architectural work is
added the power of communication to transmit messages.
In the state of Paraná, wooden architecture born of the construction technique called "board and joint."
Reflection of a time when pioneers have just arrived here, mainly from Europe and the south of Brazil. They
started to build their homes and places of religious practice because of the abundance of material in this
region of the country. Thus arises the root of our architectural culture which, according to Moscovici (2003) is
created through communication and is governed by organizational principles that reflect the social relations
that are implied in this phenomenon of communication. When this fact are analyzed in its visual and
symbolic aspects we found in the studies of the philosopher De Botton (2007) a provoking thought, where
the author suggests that "The notion that the buildings speak it help us to put in the heart of our architectural
conundrums the question about the values by which we live. In essence tells us of certain state of spirit that
seeks to encourage and sustain”. This text presents to us the architectural works not only as organizers of
urban and rural areas, but as elements that can stimulate and shape the actions of individuals before their
presence. Within this perspective there is the solid statement emanating from the manifestation of social
work which is the architecture work. The ability to transmit a content is inherent to the architecture, but
according to the thought of De Botton (2007) "Architecture may bring moral messages, but there is no power
to impose them. It suggests, instead of dictating laws. She invites us, not orders, to follow his example and is
not able to prevent violence against itself. "So the segnic interpretation is being developed by individuals
within their cultural and social environment in which it is. Then, how to consider the cultural conditions to
achieve an architecture with a sense of transcendence and cultural significance? Perhaps the answer to this
question may be the redemption and the affirmation of this culture through a proposal for a rereading of his
plastic-formal language. Like this we have the proposal of the architect Vilanova Artigas from Parana,Brazil
to the House Baeta (1956). In it the author declare the inspiration in Paraná houses where boards of the
gable are inserted in the vertical lines of the structural design of wooden houses. Thus the proposed blind
wall where the very forms of the concrete provide the texture of wood are what this study is called a "thread
of history." This practice if it had been built and carried out along the Parana generations of architects, we
would have what in contemporary Pacheco (2004) calls "School Paranaense" thereby exceeding their
cultural significance.
At this moment the presence of the representation of the past presents itself as the embodiment of
history at the moment you notice your image and translates into specific behaviors and feelings. In the
current globalization process where the image replaces the trivialization of concepts and is to be taken as a
reference in practice projectual is an urgent alert to the essence of what is called architecture. This cultural
event as shall be fixed in the identity processes that guide and give arguments to the new architectural
proposals. The architecture as a discipline is interpreted in this study as an agent able to "save" and portray
the essence of being and the soul of the place. When you redeem this memory in a subjective action the
work seems to perpetuate itself in time. This represents a particular view of lived space overflowing distant
social values that currently are lost. Even today, in a time when its original function of address family is no
longer exercised their presence and apparent limb may suggest or "communicate" the core values that,
according to a capitalist vision, are over. In contemporary societies where the time dimension is almost
extinct makes it difficult and often eliminate the possibility of sedimentation of social memory, and
consequently the spread of culture and identity of a social group within its territory. This is the current risk
this architecture, Parana root identity, is running for failing to justify its presence as a utility element , it does
not generate interest in their preservation for consideration of future generations. So the "common thread of
history" will break, also breaking the bonds of identity that provides the anchor for the establishment of
individuals in a post-modern social structure and spatial shape.
