YUSU LGBT Network

Terms of Reference
Membership
Voting membership of the Network shall be open to all members of the Union who do not
simultaneously and exclusively identify as heterosexual and cisgender, or are questioning
(hereafter “LGBT students”).

Aims & Objectives

The LGBT Network exists to provide a safe space, independent of any political affiliation,
in which LGBT students can organise in defense and support of the advancement of LGBT
equality and liberation. Our ultimate aim is that no student at York should be in any way
disadvantaged by their gender identity or expression, or their sexual or romantic orienta-
tion - be that prior to their arrival, during their time here, or on entering the wider commu-
nity upon graduation.

To this end we will, by various means:

• Provide welfare support to LGBT students

• Run campaigns and events to effect positive change for LGBT students
• Engage with other Campaign Networks on issues of cross-liberation
• Build links with the LGBT community both on and off campus
• Work to ensure that YUSU and NUS policy reflects the needs of LGBT students
• Support and hold to account the LGBT Officer in the fulfillment of their role

Structure
We will endeavour to make decisions by establishing consensus. Where this isnʼt possible,
a simple majority vote suffices, with the chair casting their vote only in the event of a tie.

Rather than a hierarchical committee structure with representative roles, the Network shall
elect a number of conveners (open to job-share of up to 3), responsible for calling meet-
ings and addressing the needs of self-organising caucuses. Conveners shall be elected by
and from those Network members self defining into the caucus.

Additional caucuses may be called by resolution of an open Network meeting.
