Pieter is originally from South Africa who moved to Cumberland about two years ago. Pieter’s business is called Continual Palingenesis, Social Media Solutions. Pieter explained that he has become a strong advocate of the movement to create Community Way Dollars, an idea developed by our other guest of the morning, Michael Linton. Pieter distributed a number of banknotes, a cheque a credit card and Community Way Dollars as a way of introducing the concept. Any business or service agency in the Comox Valley can become involved by registering an account online: www.communityway.ca The concept involves participation by groups that agree to provide Community Way (CW) dollars to their members and members of the public in return for regular cash. How does one obtain CW dollars? The answer is to pledge goods or services in an amount that suits the donor. In return for the pledge, the donor receives an equal amount of CW dollars which then can be distributed through the business or organizations’ members. Businesses that have registered to participate agree to accept a portion of the value of the good or services they provide For instance, the Waverly Hotel will accept up to 50% of the value of refreshments purchased by a customer The CW dollars they receive are then circulated back into the community. Currently there are 72 businesses that have registered in the Comox Valley and there are approximately $150K CW dollars in circulation.
