COLLEGE OF UBERAL ARTS AND SCENES omens SUMMER I-June 27-July 1 Mandatory Session June 13 Urban Decline and Revitalization: Somes ne) Chicago and Detroit MS A Ls This course explores the relationship between urban development, transportation, and the environment. Through a comparative analysis of Chicago and Detroit, students gain perspective on the changing role of various transportation systems, the effects of land use regulation on the shape of U.S. cities, and the implications these interactions have on how people live and travel through dis- cussion, analysis, and first-hand observations. The class is taught in one week. Students spend the first half of the week (Mon., Tues. and Wed. morning) in Chicago and the latter half of the week in Detroit, Michigan. The class will travel as a group on Amtrak to Detroit on Wednesday aftemoon and participate in field visits on Thursday and Friday to explore contemporary problems and opportunities.
