Overview
What is Lifecycle Management?

Lifecycle Management refers to the set of processes involved in managing

information related to a product life cycle, from the stage of concept to
delivery. It establishes procedures for governing the entire product life cycle,
which includes phases such as development, testing, and production. These
phases can occur at the same site or at different geographical locations.

The BI resources that are present in the development repository must be

transferred or promoted to the testing repository for testing deployment.
These resources or infoobjects also have dependencies that have to be
moved along with the infoobjects from one repository to another. The time
required to transfer resources from one repository to another repository must
be minimal, to obtain a high-quality and competitive product.

What is Lifecycle management for SAP BusinessObjects? Lifecycle

management for SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 is a web-based
tool that enables you to move BI resources from one system to another
system, without affecting the dependencies of these resources. It also enables
you to manage different versions of BI resources, manage dependencies of
BI resources, and roll back a promoted resource to restore the destination
system to its previous state.

6 Lifecycle Management for SAP BusinessObjects Installation and Deployment Guide

Introduction
About this Guide 1
The lifecycle management tool is a plug-in for the BusinessObjects Enterprise
application. You can promote a BI resource from one system to another only
if the same version of the SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise application is
installed on the source and the destination systems.

The lifecycle management tool uses Subversion and IBM ClearCase rational
version management systems for version control. Subversion is a third-party
freeware whereas IBM ClearCase is a configuration management system
from IBM. Subversion is integrated with the lifecycle management installer
whereas ClearCase must be installed separately. However, if your system
already has Subversion or ClearCase installed in it, then you can choose
not to install.

Installing by using CLI

This section describes how to install the lifecycle management for SAP
BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 by using the command and the response
file.

A silent installation is one that you run from the command line to automatically
install software on any machine in your system, without the installation
program prompting for information during the installation. The silent
installation is particularly useful when you need to perform multiple
installations and do not want to interrupt users who are working on machines
in your system.

You can also use the silent installation command in your own scripts. For
example, if your organization uses scripts to install software on machines,
you can add the silent update package command to your scripts to run the
update package silently.

To install the lifecycle management for SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI

3.1 by using CLI, complete the following steps:
1. Navigate to the location where setup.exe is available.
2. Select Start > Run.
3. Enter cmd in the Open field.

TION="secEnterprise" LCM_PATCH_DEPLOY=0

Lifecycle Management for SAP BusinessObjects Installation and Deployment Guide 33

3 Performing an upgrade to the Lifecycle Management
Installation

Note:
This command installs all components. However, it does not deploy the
web application because the LCM_PATCH_DEPLOY is set to 0.

The following table lists the parameters used in a silent installation. To use
a parameter, place it on the command line after the setup command and the
installation file path.

Installation Parameter Description

NAMESERVER The name of the CMS.

NSPORT The CMS port number.

CMSPASSWORD The CMS administrator's Enterprise password.

CMSAUTHENTICA The authentication method used to connect to the

TION CMS.

When set to 0 (i.e. LCM_PATCH_DEPLOY=0), the

option instructs the update package not to automati-
cally deploy web application server components (.war
LCM_PATCH_DEPLOY
files) on the Tomcat web application server. If it is not
specified, the .war files are automatically deployed.
This is an optional parameter.

If you want the installer to prompt you when the instal-

/qn
lation is complete, specify /qn+. If not, specify /qn.

This option enables you to display a progress indicator

/qb during the installation. To prompt you when the instal-
lation is complete, specify /qb+.

The lifecycle management for SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 is

installed.

You can also create a response file to run your silent installation. A response
file records the configuration information that you normally enter during the
installation process.
