4.1 Introduction

Currently, most of the malay peoples still using layman

terms to describes their illness and diseases. A search using

Google search engine by keyword ‘layman terms’ has pointed to a

few web pages with information on Layman terms that mostly

described the term that say something technical/confusing in an

easy to understand manner. But for Malaysian, each of the state

or coast had different dialect hence more different layman terms

used to describes illness and diseases.

The layman term was collected by the interview for the two

different coasts that were east coast and west coast of peninsular

Malaysia. West coast of Peninsular Malaysia, with the states of

Kedah, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Perak, Perlis and

Selangor. For the east coast made up of the states of Kelantan,

Pahang and Terengganu. The coasts were shown in the map 1.1.
 For translation purpose, we divided the layman terms

according to the similar terms and classification according to the

similar diseases. There were 24 types of different classes of the

diseases in the survey. Some of the disease had been pronounced

differently by different coast.

In order to translate the layman terms into the most

probable medical terms the classifications of the diseases was

really important to make sure the translation was accurate. The

classifications are shown in the table below.
