h, Minnesota. Engineered process water, service water, fire water, potable water
, natural gas, compressed air, sanitary sewage, and steam. Prepared PFDs, P&IDs
, material balances, valve list, line list, equipment list, sized equipment and
lines, and prepared pressure drop calculations for the raw water, process water,
gland seal water, fire water, potable water, and compressed air systems.
Created a centralized cost estimating unit for the largest public owned gas and
electric utility in the USA (Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Wrote standard est
imating procedures, supervised a team of engineering estimators (civil, mechanic
al, piping, I&C & electrical, established an estimating and cost accounting syst
em and prepared over $1 billion dollars in estimates for electric generation pro
jects.
Optimized the energy usage at a 250,000 bpd refinery on the west coast. Reduced
environmental impact from refinery operations. Results: Retained $100 million
a year in revenue, improved energy utilization, and reduced total energy costs
at the refinery
Engineered and designed 500 MW & 750 MW PC reference power plants. Demonstrated
expertise in the design and manufacture of biomass transportation fuels. Auth
ored and submitted business development plans for synthetic transportation fuels
manufacture and combined cycle power plants. Results: Submitted billions of do
llars of power generation business proposals.
Prepared the technical design on a Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization System for a 750
MW PC power plant. Results: Prevented the imposition of hundreds of millions o
f dollars in fines and lost revenue.
Managed multi-million dollar electric generation Research and Development Progra
m. Performed engineering and scientific research in advanced nuclear, fossil, c
lean coal technologies, renewables, transportation fuels, fuel cells, and enviro
nment abatement technologies. Authored corporate documents used by senior manag
ement in making billion-dollar asset commitment decisions. Results: $2 billion
worth of electric resource generation assets procured.
Evaluated feasibility and application of engineering principles for commercial e
nterprises. Assessed technical, economic, and environmental studies; measured ne
eds of commercial goods and service, up to and including new industries; develop
ed unique approach to salvage facility destined for demolition. Designed innovat
ive way to produce methanol from existing integrated coal gasification combined
cycle plant. Results: Design was proven to produce $70 million per year in reve
nues with a payback of six months.
Formulated and authored plan to reduce power plant air emissions. Researched th
reats posed by loss of operating permits; assembled and directed team of chemica
l engineers; evaluated all possible replacement fuels; designed and specified pl
ant modifications, best technology and related capital costs. Results: Authored
report for air emissions compliance strategy, saving billions of dollars in los
t revenues and million of dollars in fines. Prevented loss of operating permits
of 8000 MW of electric generation.
Created management program for public gas and electric utility. Assessed, resea
rched and recommended changes in energy usage by large industrial customers for
the largest utility in the United States. Developed technical materials, method
ology and engineering, and economic calculations needed to evaluate alternatives
. Results: Reduced energy usage in northern California by 20%, producing millio
n of dollars in electric and natural gas savings.
