Cop Five State Awards

copped five awards over the
weekend at the annual Assoctat-
ed Press news and photography
awards dinner held in Huntsville,
The oevasion was the spring
meeting of the Alabama AP As-
sociation, held at the Russel
Erskme Hotel in Huntsville.
The Florence Times and The
Tri-Cities Daily staff also recety-
ed, for the second successive
year, a special citation from the
Associated Press.
It was “for outstanding mem-
bership participation by the news:
paper In the Associated Press."
Photographer Sam Edwards and
Sports Editor Hap Halbrooks both
were double winners for 1002 ef-
forts, while staff writer Chris
Eckl copped o single prize.
Edwards won second place jn
Spot news photos and copped a
second place in features pictures
as well,
Halbrooks won a third place in
Sports and a second place tie with

ed-robber" and a “fire” supplied
the needed elements for the two
top awards of the Associated
Press news contests.
Ken Hogg of the Dothan Engle
told of the deadly rampage of
the chiropractor-rebber in a dra-
matic story that won the sweep-
stukes award for news writing.
Charles Moore of Miami, Fla.,
won the top award for news pic
tures with a touching portrayal
of a family which had ost its
home and all belongings in a fire.
Moore was a phutographer for
the Alabama Journul when the
picture was taken.
