acquire admission to the leading
law schools in India. Students would
be selected based on their aptitude
for the study of law and trained for
admission to the leading law schools
(both national law schools and non
national law schools) through a year
long intensive process. It is hoped
that such access to premier legal
education and the creation of advocates
from within these communities would go
along way towards empowering these
communities; for law is an instrument
of power and if deployed well, can help
these communities help themselves.
Indeed, as the age-old adage goes:
“Give aman a fish, you feed him for a
day. Teach him how to fish, you feed

Prof. Shamnad Basheer, who is currently the Ministry of HRD Professor for IP Law
at the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata.
