Needs Analysis
Discussion questions and activities 1. Needs analysis is very applicable in situations where students have very specific language needs. However, it can also be used in situations where learners needs are not so specific, as in the case of students learning English as a foreign language in a school setting. What might the focus of a needs analysis be in this situation? In this case the students dont have any immediate perceptions of needs, so it is necessary to consult employers, parents, teachers and others to find out what knowledge of English they expect students to achieve. Therefore the curriculum is settled based on what that people think is the best for students to study at school in the same way that the others matters. 2. If you were planning a need analysis for the situation in which you teach, what information would you seek to obtain? Age, pace, English knowledge and educational background, English language course, visit to a foreign country where English is the first language, materials that students like to study (books, songs, newspapers, etc.), their opinions about why study English and what are their main problems to acquire the language. 3. Discuss the concept of stakeholders in planning a needs analysis in relation to a context you are familiar with. How can the concerns of different stakeholders be addressed? Stakeholders are a person or a group of persons that have a particular interest or involvement in the issues or programs that are being examined on a needs analysis. They have a right to comment on the curriculum process offered in schools, institutions and etc. In relation to a context I am familiar with, the stakeholders of a needs analysis will be parents, school principal and the others employers, the others teachers and also the students own.
