Humankind has aspired to find a measure of the universe since time immemorial. After the discovery of the recession of galaxies, it has been meaningful to enquire about its dynamics. However, as in all pioneering astronomical endeavours, this started with unwarranted generalizations. By now a large enough volume has been explored to begin to get an idea of the structure. But dynamics based on the simplest geometrical and topological assumptions of homegeneity, isotropy and smoothness may be applicable only on the largest scales. To find the geometric and toplogical structures more relevant for different scales, the wealth of data must be examined without being too hasty to apply the same dynamics on all scales.
