Cairo Metro, a public enterprise of Egypts Ministry of Transport, is undergoing an ambitious process of expansion, renovation and modernization of its entire network of operations. It will soon join the new and modern Line 3, which links Cairo Airport with the citys Western district. With a population of approximately 17 million people, Cairo is one of the most densely populated cities in Africa. The Cairo Metro, in operation since 1990, currently transports more than 3 million passengers per day. To manage such high passenger flow in the most efficient way, Cairo Metro started the installations for ticketing system based on contactless smart card (NFC / RFID) technology.

Eng. Mohamed Shemi, president of the Metro Company said that the system provider currently install 600 new turnstile gates with contactless smart card at cost of 45 million L.E and this would be installed particularly and would be mainly for Metro subscription users which represent 50% of Metro passengers, on the other side would be their a targeted percentage through a new developed product whish is the prepaid contactless smart card which could be charged for whatever number of trips you need.

Eng. Shemi added that this project consider the first phase of renewing the Metro old gate and that technology would spread over the two lines of Metro, referring that the contracted Spanish company is specialized in IT for transportation companies.

Eng. Shemi indicated that this project mainly try to make the passengers flow more easy by deploying a compared technology with that in worldwide undergrounds.

The Metro president ensured that the timeline for installations is 3 months end July 2011 and would be their machines for getting tickets out in every station at the two lines of Metro.
