Cooling with Groundwater

EID Group 20

ABSTRACT
Nowadays, global warming due to greenhouse gases has become an important issue that causes warmer temperature and increase of sea level. Hence, in our project, we utilize the basement drainage water from the ground to cool down the temperature of a building instead of draining the water to elsewhere. This enables us to reduce the effect of global warming, because: Save water resource Less electricity cost Renewable and environmental-friendly Cheaper to install

Problem Statement / Objectives

The objectives of our project: 1) To develop an idea of using basement drainage groundwater to cool the building. 2) To improve the drainage system to avoid basement flooding.

Background / Current Practice

Dolor Sit Amet How the new system works?

Most Singapore buildings install airconditioner to cool down air. However, this produces greenhouse gases and costs high electricity power.

(1) Water is collected from the underground through perforated pipe (French Drain). This problem could be tackled by using Geothermal cooling system as underground soil has low temperature. The groundwater is also much cooler. Holes have to be drilled deep (80-100m) into the soil to insert pipes to channel the cooled water. This is however an expensive process. In Singapore, there are a lot of deep basements under buildings, e.g. commercial and MRT station. All basements need to have basement drainage system to drain away groundwater to prevent basement flooding and damage. The groundwater is simply drained to elsewhere. In our project, we combine the ideas to modify and utilize the basement drainage system to extract the drainage water to cool the building. This is not only environmental-friendly but it also saves the cost of drilling deep holes. (2) Water is pumped to a cubicle by a pump machine. The hot air is allowed to pass through an air cooler.

(3) Heat exchange occurs in the air cooler. The cooled air is then blown out by a blower to the building. Cooled water will become heated thereafter. The heated and excess water is flown into a water heater where is then circulated out to the building for other reuse purposes.
