Which article is the author summarizing?

How many pages is the original article?

How long is the current summary? Remember, the summary should be BRIEF.

If it is the SFD, the summary should be at least 150 words; the revised draft should be at
least 250 words; the final, portfolio draft should be at least 300 words. The drafts should
not be over 500 words.

What are the main areas that the summary covers? List them.

What are the main points in the article? List them.

What point or points has the author missed? List them

If you gloss this over or ignore this part, you are hurting the author and you are hurting
your own work. The purpose of the summary is to discuss all of the important points in
the article.

Read the summary. Locate any uses of I. Underline them.


A summary is supposed to be objective, so the I must be completely removed.

Reread the summary. Locate any places where the other judges the article or author.
This means, find any place where the author indicates that they like or dislike the author,
they judge or offer their own opinion of the topic, or there is an opinion. Put any
opinions in brackets [ ].

A summary is OBJECTIVE, this means that your opinion and anyone else’s opinion is
NOT relevant to the summary. Remove ALL opinion—that is not what a summary
provides.
