EXPERIMENT

THE EFFECT OF HEAT ON SOLIDS

AIM
To study the effect of heat on solids

MATERIALS
Ring, metal ball

APPARATUS
Bunsen burner

PROCEDURE
1. Insert the metal ball into the ring 2. Then heat the metal ball using a Bunsen burner and once again try to insert the metal ball into the ring 3. Record the observations in the table 4. Cool the metal ball to room temperature and try inserting it again into the ring.

RESULT
Condition of the metal ball Observation

Before heating The metal ball _____ fit into the ring After heating After cooling The metal ball _____ fit into the ring The metal ball _____ fit into the ring

ANALYSIS
1. What happened to the size (volume) of the metal ball when it was heated? increased / decreased 2. What happened to the size (volume) of the metal ball when it was cooled? increased / decreased

3. What happened to the metal ball after it has been heated and cooled? The ball expanded / contracted when heated and expanded / contracted when cooled

CONCLUSION
The metal ball _________ __________ its size when The metal ball _________ __________ its size when and heated and cooled
