Chem Lewis Structures
2. Draw the correct Lewis dot structure for the formaldehyde molecule, CH2 O. Describe the shape of the molecule. Is the molecule polar or nonpolar?
# e - = 4 + 2(1) + 6 = 12 e -
O C H H
The shape is approximately trigonal planar. The molecule is polar. (Top half is a little negative and the bottom half is a little positive.)
3. Draw the correct Lewis dot structure for the ethanol molecule, CH3 CH2 OH. Describe the shape of the molecule. Is the molecule polar or nonpolar? # e - = (2)4 + 6(1)+ 6 = 20 eH H C H H C H O H
The shape is definitely not flat. Its somewhat prism-like with a bent leg hanging off of it.

4. Draw the correct Lewis dot structure for sulfur tetrafluoride. Make a guess about the shape and whether it is polar or nonpolar. sulfur tetrafluoride SF4 # e - = 6 + 4(7) = 34 e F F S F F
The electron pair geometry is called trigonal bipyramidal. The molecular geometry is called see-saw.

5. Draw two different Lewis dot structures corresponding to two different molecules for the chemical formula, C3 H6 . The names of the two different molecules are propene and cyclopropane.

Draw the Lewis dot structures for the molecules ClO 2 and NO2 . What is the unusual characteristic of these molecules? Compare these structures to the structures for the chlorite and nitrite ion. #e- = 7 + 2(6) = 19 e O Cl O
For ClO2
For NO2
#e- = 5 + 2(6) = 17 eO N O
For ClO2-
#e- = 7 + 2(6) + 1= 20 eO Cl O
For NO2-
#e- = 5 + 2(6) + 1 = 18 e-
The usual characteristic about the ClO2 and NO2 molecules is that they have an odd number of electrons. However, note that ClO2- and NO2have an even number of electrons and satisfy the octet rule.
