Preparation of Esters

Purpose: To create esters and be able to identify their smells Hypothesis: After mixing the solutions and heating them up, I will be able to identify each of the smells easily. Procedures: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Fill a half full 400 mL beaker with water. For the liquid alcohols and acids (except sulfuric), use 2 mL quantities; for the solids use 0.5g Smell each alcohol and acid before mixing. Add a sample of amyl alcohol to test tube #1; methyl alcohol to test tube #2; octyl alcohol to test tube #3, ethyl alcohol to test tube #4; and benzyl alcohol to test tube #5. To test tube #1, add acetic acid; to test tube #2, add salicylic acid; to test tube #3, add acetic acid; to test tube #4, add formic acid; to test tube #5, add acetic acid. To each test tube add 6-8 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid. Immerse all 5 of the test tubes into the hot water bath and stir gently for 4-5 minutes. Conclusion: Overall, it was pretty easy to identify each of the smells; however, for us it was hard to identify smell of rum and jasmine. One of our test tubes was not clean and had some green solid in the mixture. This source of error was probably the reason we were not able to identify the odours of rum and jasmine easily as others.
