There has been myriad articles written on Sholay. There is hardly anything left to be told .

But I would still like to accentuate my views on the movie. Sholay was a pathbreaking and a landmark film for Indian cinema. Infact the film enjoyed an uprecedented success and ran for five continuous years in one of the theatres of Mumbai . The charisma of the movie is still alive and its position as the numero uno is undisputed till date. No movie has ever come close to matching the magic that Sholay weaved on the viewers. The Indian cinema can very well be divided into two periods Before Sholay and After Sholay. Such was the impact of the movie that the whole nation went into a frenzy. The movie enjoyed an unprecedented run at the boxoffice.Even in monetry terms it is the highest grossing film ever when inflation adjusted. It was a landmark film in many ways. Indias first 70 mm movie. Arguably the greatest starcast to have ever ensembled on screen till date. All the actors had given top notch performances. Amjad Khan( Gabbar singh), the most famous character of Indian cinema redefined the villany on screen. The deadly duo of Salim-Javed, the script writer, gave Indian cinema its most famous characters till date. The power of the script could be gauged from the fact that each and every character went on to create history. The characters are etched in the viewers memory till date. Gabbar singh, jai ,veeru ,basanti, mausi, jailor, soorma bhopali ..the list continues. Even the horse dhanno became a household name. Every other auto wala had their vehicle named Dhanno. Sholay is a film complete in all aspect . It had all the ingredients of a filmmaking whether its comedy, tragedy, drama, romance etc.No other film has been able to blend all these aspects with such a panache. The credit goes to Ramesh Sippy- The Director. No one could repeat the magic of Sholay. He himself could create the same. The film has a fabulous music score . Dialogues were brilliant. Who can forget the most famous one Kitne aadmi the? The breathtaking cinematography . The location (Ram Nagaram in Karnataka) where the shooting took place has become a heritage site for film lovers. One interesting thing I would like to mention here. I was reading Indian today independece day special edition in 2003. They has covered the past 50 years most important events of our country . I was astonished to see that the year 1975 had the mention of sholay. This is a no mean achievement . For a film to be included in a countrys history speaks volumes about it. I can go on writing about it endlessly as there are so many things to be written. But I will end the post with saying The Magic Continues Few interesting anecdotes for movie buffs 1. The role of Gabbar singh was initially offered to Danny which eventually went to Amjad Khan. 2. Salim Javed had approached Manmohan Desai to direct the film. Now two of my own findings : 3.The word Sholay has never been used in the film. 4. Amitabh bacchhans name appears after Sanjeev Kumar and Dharmendra in the credits. He was still new in the industry and a smaller star compared to the other two.
