BATURA EARTH PAN; SURVEY AND FIELD ASSESMENT REPORT CARRIED OUT ON ON 8TH AUGUST 2008.

LOCALITY; Batura earth pan is located in Gumba location Malkamari division in Madera west district. ACCESSIBILITY; The pan is approximately fifteen kilometers from Gumba shopping centre/settlement area.Its accessible by an all weather road from Gumba. TOPOGRAPHY; The pan is ideally located in a narrow water channel in the highlands of Madera west district. The approximate elevation is 768m by GPS meter above sea level. The main vegetation cover is acacia,bushes,shrubs and grasslands. An important factor in the considered pan site is the excessively large catchment area which will ensure enough water storage volume. A visual field test and analysis of soil particles reveals red/brown clayey loam which can be rolled into relatively thin threads.These soils are generally suitable for pan construction. POPULATION DATA;

Livestock water supply is singled out as the most important purpose for the construction of the proposed pan, .hence in estimating the livestock water requirement and the livestock carrying capacity,the following livestock population data has been collected in collaboration with the administration and the local community.How ever the given livestock data varies from season to season due to change in weather pattern.

HUMAN POPULATION DATA Approximate human population is fifteen thousands people. Approximate no of households is 2,500 with 5-6 family members. LIVESTOCK POPULATION; (i) Herds of cattle .. 1,000 (ii) Camels 45,000 (iii) Sheep and shoats 3,000 (iv) Donkeys .. 500 (v) TOTAL .......................................49,500 EXISTING WATER SOURC ES; There are two existing water pans implemented by the ministry of water and irrigation through the National water and pipeline co-operation. One is in intended for domestic use while the other is purposely for livestock water supply. The reliability period is approximately two months after the rainy season after which the community water requirement may only be catered for from other available sources.
