ABG PEARLS Correction: occurs when the primary impairment is rectified with medical intervention; e.g with respiratory acidosis, CO2 would go back to normal. 2. Compensation: a. Occurs when both parameters are out of range b. Parameters should be going opposite directions c. If pH is within normal range then compensation is full; d. If pH is not within normal but both parameters are out of range and going opposite directions then compensation is partial. e. To identify the primary impairment in a fully compensated ABG result: match the parameters with the pH. A pH below 7.40 indicates an acidotic process; a pH above 7.40 an alkalotic process.
