GREEN ENGINEERING

Process Safety , Inherent Safety A new Paradigm

Definition Principles Applications Example

Definition
Green Engineering is the process of using hardware & software technologies to reduce the negative impact on environment. It is to minimize -Risk to human health & the environment -generation of pollution at the source

PRINCIPLES
Maximize Efficiency- Product ,Process ,& System should be design to maximize mass, energy, space & time efficiently & effectively. Prevention rather than Treatment-It is better to prevent waste than to treat or clean up waste after it is formed. Durability rather than immortality- it is necessary to design a product with a targeted lifetime to avoid undesirable materials in the environment. Design for commercial afterlife-To reduce waste components that remain functional & valuable can be recovered for reuse & reconfiguration.

APPLICATIONS Environmental monitoring It is to increase the focus on the effect of climate change on the environment. A global effort is required to reduce the amount of green house gases. Energy Storage System There are many type of ESS s like chemical, electrical, mechanical, thermal. But the main focus on the electrochemical & electric ESS s including batteries , fuel cells , capacitors.

Solar Energy- Sun sustains life on Earth. It is a unlimited source for energy. Wind Energy-It is a important source of renewable energy around the world. In USA wind power capacity increased by 45 % in 2007.

In recent future IBM is going to implement the reuse of computer -make modular -replace processor , memory etc -economical for the user This requires a continuous improvement in both economic and environmental performance through the designs process.
