THE GREAT DEPRESSION


A period of failed businesses and massive unemployment which began with the crash of the stock market in 1929.

The Dust Bowl Years of drought during the 1930s which made the effects of the Great Depression even worse. Farmers in six states watched their fields dry up and crops die. Giant dust storms covered buried farmhouses up to their windowsills. Everything was covered in sand. Many people left the region to find work picking crops in California.

THE NEW DEAL


The New Deal was a wide variety of programs designed by FDR in attempt to end the Great Depression. (1) Banks were closed and reopened under government supervision. (2) Loans were given to farmers and businesses in danger of closing or failing. (3) A system of regulating (controlling) stock sales was created. (4) Social Security was started to help retired, disabled, and jobless people (5) Labor Unions were allowed to form to protect workers. The_New_Deal.asf

The New Deal didn t end the Great Depression, but helped many Americans have hope and survive the hard times. Hydroelectricity is electricity generated by running water. Dams were built in order to generated electricity and irrigate crops. (ex: Hoover Dam)
