First evaluate your existing courses and see if you currently do the following in your instruction: 1) Identify objectives for each week and each lesson 2) Provide opportunities for learners to interact with: The content Their peers The instructor 3) Identify resources and how to find them 4) Provide appropriate assessment tools for the content 5) Provide ongoing and summative feedback If you are already doing the previously noted processes, we can help you make the transition to online teaching. Creating effective online instruction takes significant effort and requires different instructional approaches than face-toface instruction. The good news is that it also requires many of the essential pedagogically sound practices you already use in your classroom. In the Education Innovation Lab, we will work with you to transform your excellent content into effective online instructional media. Provoke thoughtful online discourse among your students; offer engaging, relevant activities and repurpose your existing content into useful online media. Mays Faculty Innovator


Dr. Marisa Dudiak, ECED My appreciation for using technology to enhance learning started as a 2nd grade classroom teacher. My students were using web logs (blogs) with literacy and content area topics such as science and social studies. As my career progressed towards the instruction of in- and preservice teachers, I consistently share effective technologies that will engage, motivate and advance student learning. Current favorites that have proved to be purposeful to teachers and students are: Glogs interactive, multimedia posters, Storybird collaborative storytelling, and Monster Exchange teaching reading and descriptive writing. Since fall 2010, I have worked collaboratively with Dr. Janese Daniels to pilot the use of e-portfolios with ECED program juniors and seniors. Using Wikispaces, students are introduced to and encouraged to use videos, podcasts, glogs, and other new tools such as Jing to populate their portfolios.

Whats In Your Room?


If you have been assigned to teach in any of the classrooms listed, then you will have access to an interactive whiteboard to support your instruction. Summer is a great time to work with the team in the Education Innovation Lab to convert your existing PowerPoints into dynamic, interactive media. You can also learn how to deliver your lessons in ways that quickly capture student feedback and increase student engagement and retention of material.

Dr. Mubina Kirmani, with her mentor, Mr. Paul Iwancio explored a variety of emerging video technologies for possible use in teacher training. Dr. Kirmani had opportunity, with great support from Mr. Iwancio, to experiment with different kinds of emerging video equipment and therefore, feels better equipped to teach and conduct research on the use and implications of video in teacher training. She has been granted Sabbatical Leave, for this Fall 2011, to examine the impact of video on Early Childhood Education (ECE) teacher trainees reflective process. Video applications in teacher training is becoming increasingly important as the ECE department and the College of Education as a whole make changes towards Electronic Portfolios and the Teacher Performance Accreditation Consortium (TPAC), with emphasis on video as an important segment of teacher training. Ashley Lucas and Dr. Linda Macaulay worked together on increasing productivity through use of technology and enhancing technology-based instructional materials. Protg and mentor also worked together to develop a wikispace for use with Dr. Lucas social studies methods course. She had never used a wiki before, and expresses that Dr. Macaulay walked her through each step of the process. Additionally, Drs. Macaulay and Lucas worked on going green with online assignments and grading.

Capturing Student Understanding Through Learner Response Systems


The use of learner response systems to formatively assess student understanding, provoke discussion and increase individual participation is growing. The College of Education owns Activote, ActiveExpressions and SMART Responders to support faculty interest in gaining real time data about their students level of understanding. These devices are also finding favor in the schools where we are placing our pre-service teachers so knowledge of them and proper modeling of the devices as an instructional tool is critical. The research supports that use of learner response systems is received positively by students who use them and improves their perception of the learning experience (Freeman & Blaney 2005; Sharma, et al, 2005). The limitation to using the devices typically focuses on their prohibitive cost or lack of availability. To that end, some faculty at the College of Education are using free online tools that serve the same functions of increasing student engagement and capturing real time assessment information. As Daniel Rozmiarek, ILPD, reports: My students are texting during class. I told them to. I use the PollEverywhere.com website to allow students to use their own mobile devices to participate in the class discussion. All of my students have a mobile phone, and most admitted to texting during their classes. But, they hide their texting because professors actively forbid texting during class. To prevent texting is denying the reality that mobile devices are a part of student life. I accept this reality and invite students to use their texting capabilities to make meaningful contributions to the class.

I create a question and display it on the screen. Students see a number to send a text message, Tweet, or web response just as they would when communicating directly with each other. Those messages appear on a scrolling discussion board in real-time. For one lesson in EDUC 301: Writing for Teachers, I gave students a copy of a business letter to critique. They discussed the letter in small groups, but they posted their comments to PollEverywhere.com so the other groups in the class could see all the comments without interrupting the small group discussions. Students felt more inclined to participate by text message because they were uncomfortable speaking up in front of the whole class. Others appreciated being able to comment without waiting for a turn to speak. The use of student response media, in this case Poll Everywhere, has enabled my students to use familiar devices for purposes that encourage discourse, increase engagement and recognize their roles as digital natives.
